HISTORY & CURRENT

Willow Creek Community Church has consistently been one of the most influential churches in America with a clear vision focused on reaching un-churched people worldwide.

Willow Creek began in a movie theater more than 40 years ago with a goal of doing church differently—reaching those who were burned out on religion. Today, Willow Creek continues to pioneer innovative ways for people to experience the love of God.

In addition to the church, the Global Leadership Network, formerly Willow Creek Association, was founded to serve, influence, inspire, and develop leaders around the world through the Global Leadership Summit (GLS). The GLS is one of the widest-reaching leadership events, with over 1,300 satellite broadcasts reaching over 130 countries and more than 300,000 people.

The church went through dramatic leadership changes in 2018 and a "new day" is beginning to take shape at Willow as the staff, elders and congregation seek to honor the Lord with the future of Willow Creek Church.

Currently there are about 20,000 people who gather at one of eight Chicagoland locations each weekend, and thousands more stream services online through Willow Creek TV.

The music and production during services at South Barrington is world-class in its commitment to excellence, dedication to creativity, and its aim to inspire and engage people in a worship experience that is second to none. View services, including worship and creative elements, on Willow Creek TV.

Willow Creek remains, above all else, a local church of Christ followers committed to loving everyone, always, reaching people far from God, and helping them become fully-devoted followers of Christ.

MISSION, VISION & VALUES

The Mission of Willow Creek Community Church is to turn irreligious people into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

The Vision of Willow Creek Community Church is to be a biblically functional community of believers so Christ’s redemptive purposes can be accomplished in the world.

The Values: Ten core values bring clarity to the things that matter most at Willow. They guide how we achieve our mission, influencing major leadership decisions as well as everyday ministry plans. They even help us navigate staffing and budget issues. In short, they keep us focused on the unique call God has given us as a local church.

  • We believe anointed teaching is the catalyst for transformation in individuals’ lives and in the church. This includes the concept of teaching for life change (Romans 12:7; 2 Timothy 3:16–17; James 1:23–25).
  • We believe lost people matter to God, and therefore, they matter to the church. This includes the concepts of relational evangelism and evangelism as a process (Luke 5:30–32; Luke 15; Matthew 18:14).
  • We believe the church should be culturally relevant while remaining doctrinally pure. This includes the concept of sensitively relating to our culture through our facility, printed materials, and use of the arts (1 Corinthians 9:19–23).
  • We believe Christ followers should manifest authenticity and yearn for continuous growth. This includes the concepts of personal authenticity, character, and wholeness (Ephesians 4:25–26, 32; Hebrews 12:1; Philippians 1:6).
  • We believe a church should operate as a unified community of servants, with men and women stewarding their spiritual gifts. This includes the concepts of unity, servanthood, spiritual gifts, and ministry callings (1 Corinthians 12 and 14; Romans 12; Ephesians 4; Psalm 133:1).
  • We believe loving relationships should permeate every aspect of church life. This includes the concepts of love-driven ministry, ministry accomplished in teams, and relationship building (1 Corinthians 13; Nehemiah 3; Luke 10:1; John 13:34–35).
  • We believe life-change happens best in community. This includes the concepts of discipleship, vulnerability, and accountability (Luke 6:12–13; Acts 2:44–47).
  • We believe excellence honors God and inspires people. This includes the concepts of evaluation, critical review, intensity, and excellence (Colossians 3:17; Malachi 1:6–14; Proverbs 27:17).
  • We believe churches should be led by men and women with God-given leadership gifts. This includes the concepts of empowerment, servant leadership, strategic focus, and intentionality (Nehemiah 1–2; Romans 12:8; Acts 6:2–5).
  • We believe the pursuit of full devotion to Christ and His cause is normal for every believer. This includes the concepts of stewardship, servanthood, downward mobility, and the pursuit of kingdom goals (1 Kings 11:4; Philippians 2:1–11; 2 Corinthians 8:7).

WILLOW CREEK STUDENT MINISTRY APPROACH

Student Impact is the exciting and engaging high school ministry of Willow Creek Community Church. It focuses on creating large & small group settings for students in grades 9 to 12. Impact engages a diverse group of students through worship, games, teaching, relationships and mentoring/discipleship opportunities. The Student Impact Director (aka "High School Pastor") gives oversight to all of the ministries for this age group.

WELCOMING & FUN

A goal of Student Impact is to create a place where students can feel safe, cared for and loved by paid staff and volunteers who express Jesus' love to them. Impact staff and volunteers seek to create fun environments where a student can be him or herself, as well as a place where parents feel safe and secure about their students attending any Impact service, event or activity.

LARGE GROUP

Student Impact currently utilizes the large-group experience on Sunday morning to help break down relational barriers, engage students with the Gospel, equip young believers to grow in their faith and invite all into a worship experience with the Lord.

HOUSE AND SMALL GROUP

Relationships with house group leaders, small group leaders and each other are a focus of the Student Impact environment. There is a flurry of purposeful and fun action and activity on a typical Sunday afternoon-- including time to connect in smaller settings with groups determined by grade and gender at school-specific host homes.

CAMPS AND MISSIONS

Special events (onsite and offsite) have been a hallmark of Student Impact in the past. Specifically mission/service opportunities and camps have been the most anticipated experiences. Staff and volunteers use these special experiences to pour deep into the lives of those who know Jesus and grow the kingdom through sharing the good news to unchurched friends who attend!

LEADERSHIP

Willow Creek believes the church is to be led by a plurality of godly leaders. By relying on consensual agreement of godly Elders selected from the congregation, the church creates a healthy checks-and-balances of leadership direction, financial accountability, spiritual guidance, and ministry implementation.

Willow Creek implements these biblical principles in its leadership structure. A strategy of biblically based policies and guidelines within its Elder board and ministry leaders guides ministry decisions and ensures that a healthy, God-honoring implementation of leadership and pastoral care is carried out.

Willow Creek’s Elders provide spiritual oversight, direction, and leadership for the church, entrusting the implementation of that direction to ministry leaders and staff, under the leadership of the lead pastor. Senior staff leadership is held accountable for fulfilling the Elder board’s direction. This system of organizational leadership, known as Policy Governance, allows the Elders to focus their gifts and time on their biblical mandate to lead and shepherd the church, while allowing ministry leaders (staff) the opportunity to maximize their gifts and talents as they lead their ministries and make practical decisions on how to implement and carry out the direction provided by the Elders.

The church is currently conducting a search for their next Senior Pastor and the staff has gone through restructuring to better align for a more collaborative model.

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

STUDENT LEADERSHIP CHANGES

Willow Creek Church is seeking a strong leader who is both collaborative and visionary. This person will have the ability to develop leaders, cast vision and implement strategies that will promote growth within the Student Impact Ministry. The overall Student Ministry at Willow Creek has changed in the last year with two long-term veteran staff members moving to take on new roles. The new high-capacity Student Impact Director will inherit the normal challenges that go with these changes but will have the opportunity to help shape and define the path forward.

GROWTH AND DIVERSITY

The new Student Impact Director will need to adapt and create strategies to serve the families attending Willow Creek while keeping his or her eye on those they are not yet reaching. As many of the area schools become more and more diverse, a focus on staffing team members (paid and volunteer) to meet this need will also become a focus. A typical Sunday house-group is becoming more filled with greater diversity (race, gender, socioeconomics, church background, etc.) and leaders should be recruited (and trained) to sustain this pattern and meet future growth needs.

COLLABORATIVE LEADER

The Student Ministry at the the South Barrington Campus has some amazing staff leading middle and high school students. With multiple paid staff in the "next-gen" lane, Willow Creek needs a strong team player to contribute and specifically a team builder for the high school segment of the ministry who can continue to recruit and develop a paid and volunteer team for all areas of the high school ministry. The team (paid and volunteer) is large and diverse but must continue to grow in number and ability. The new leader should have the skills to lead collaboratively but also effectively train in areas where the team needs to improve.

OUTWARD FACED: PROXIMITY MATTERS

Willow Creek Community Church is an outreach focused church. The expectation for the High School Pastor is to continue to place an emphasis on outreach and reaching those who do not yet know Jesus. In addition, the new leader should equip adults who will engage students outside the walls of Willow Creek. It should not be uncommon for Student Impact members to show support and engage by attending sporting events, musical performances and drama productions. The Student Impact Director should lead this charge by setting the example for others to follow. The phrase "proximity matters" (being present with students) was uttered several times as the Impact team met to discuss the future of the ministry.

SERVICE AND TRANSFORMATION

Willow Creek is driven by the desire to see lives transformed by Jesus. A significant percentage of the high school students are serving in the church through the kids ministry. In addition, students are quick to register for missions and service opportunities. The Church has a reputation for being generous with their time and resources and it is believed that this core value of generosity is instilled at a young age. Serving in community helps transform lives, the new Impact Director can lead in this area by providing an increase in service opportunities for students.
