ABOUT

Blue Springs Christian Church (BSCC) has been guiding their community into a fully devoted relationship with Jesus for the past four decades. This church of 1,000 (pre-Covid) is in the far east suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri. With an expansive facility and a remodeled worship center they are ready to once again “get back to normal this fall.” But they know that without a growing evangelism program and a vibrant guest experience, they will not be able to complete the mission they are called to, which is to reach and engage the lost.

“We are a Both/And church in our Outreach Ministry--both Attractional and Missional,” says Senior Pastor Dave Ferneau. Dave has faithfully served BSCC for three decades. “We are a Both/And church and by that I mean, we are both Attractional and Missional, and we are a phygital church--both digital and in person. We believe relationships and prayer are essential to reaching people in a post-Christian culture. Out mindset is one of being missionaries.”

The church is a part of the Independent Christian Church of the Restoration Movement. Read more about the church stated beliefs on their website here. The church has a modern feel with worship led by a band in a newly remodeled worship center. The church has taken this opportunity to also rework some of the kids and nursery space. A few years ago they opened an incredible student center.

BSCC is positioned to be a missionary in the Eastern Jackson County suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri, including Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Independence, and Lee’s Summit. These suburbs are growing with new homes and young families. It is a short drive to the 30th largest metro area in the country. Kansas City is home to the Royals, Chiefs, and of course…BBQ! THE WORSHIP MINISTRY

What's Next

“We have a strong, healthy, and appreciated worship ministry,” says Executive Minister David Judd. “Our contemporary services are very strong, and our one traditional service is good and popular with a segment of our church. We have some depth at all musical positions and growing depth in our technical production positions.”

The remodeled space has been a major step forward including an LED wall, moving light fixtures, and a new audio system. The blacked-out ceiling and new tools have really helped take the minister forward. Worship is led by a modern four-to-six-piece band that utilizes tracks on occasion. The church sings modern worship from publishers like Elevation, Hillsong and Bethel.

Like many churches, the church was caught off guard by the sudden shut down and move to online in March of 2020. “Our digital ministry needs improvement. We livestream services on Facebook and have on-demand videos on our website via Vimeo. But that is about it,” says Dave Ferneau. The church is currently adding an Online Minister to oversee an online campus launch.

The current worship leader is heading to be an associate pastor at a church in Orlando after a five-year run of leadership. Whomever takes this role will benefit from the foundation and building that has been completed. This is not a re-build or remodel as much as it is a continuation of what has been occurring.

Some Q and A...

How would you best describe the condition of your current worship ministry?
We have a strong, healthy, and appreciated worship ministry. Our contemporary services are very strong, and our one traditional service is good and popular with a segment of our church. We have some depth at all musical positions and growing depth in our technical production positions.

What is the general consensus of your staff about the worship in your church?
The staff, like the rest of the church, are very positive about worship in our church. Worship is the first of our three steps towards a fully devoted relationship with Jesus, and a key and necessary part of spiritual formation and life at Blue Springs Christian Church.

What are your hopes and dreams for whomever takes this role?
That the new Worship Minister would take the solid foundation that we have and build upon it. That he or she would draw more BSCCers into serving in the Worship and Creative Arts ministry. That he or she would exemplify and lead our church family into a lifestyle of worship and intimacy with God.

In six months why will you be thrilled that you have hired this person?
We will regularly be experiencing a new depth and intensity in our worship. Our worship services will draw both the unchurched and longtime believers closer to God and encourage them to take next steps on their spiritual journey.

What does it take to win on your staff team?
Live out our staff values and strive towards fulfilling our mission and goals.

How would you describe your church’s musical/worship style?
We have a contemporary worship style with Elevation Worship being a primary resource, along with Hillsong and Bethel Music. We do have a traditional 8:00 service with Hymns that is popular with a segment of the church. However, the vast majority prefer a more contemporary style that includes songs that they hear on worship radio.

Are you hoping to see the worship style change?
We want to see all of our ministries grow and improve, so in that sense we want to see our worship change. What we will always desire and seek is for there to be an unmistakable sense that God is powerfully present among us in our worship services; and that lives are being saved and transformed as we honor and experience God.

What is your church’s philosophy regarding reaching people who are de-churched, unchurched, or anti-church?
The further de-churched, unchurched and anti-church people are from the cross, the more the Good News of Jesus must be demonstrated before declared. As we demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus, hearts will become increasingly open to the message of the Gospel. We are a Both/And church times two. By that I mean, we are both Attractional and Missional, and we are a phygital church--both digital and in person. We believe relationships and prayer are essential to reaching people in a post-Christian culture. Out mindset is one of being missionaries.

How does worship or the arts play a part in reaching people?
Worship is the first step in our Growth Plan. We are committed to reaching people for Jesus by helping them to grow in their love for God through worship, their love for people through groups, and their heart to serve by serving. We just completed a renovation of our Worship Center to create a great environment for worship and enhance our usage of the arts in our worship. Art is able to connect with the heart and soul in a way that words alone cannot. The arts are key to connecting children, students, and adults to God, and to His mission and church.

What is your annual church budget?
$1,660,000.00

How many full-time pastors do you currently have?

Pre-COVID we had 35-40% of our adults in small groups.

How many current staff members have been there 3 years or more?
3

What three ministries of your church will receive the most resources next year?Missions, NextGen, Worship & Creative Arts, Outreach

(Missions is local, national, and international and so is large. The next 3 ministries are the 3 ministries receiving the most resources on our campus.)

Are there any non-negotiables in your church in regard to worship & art?  If so, describe them.
Worship is an encounter with our Holy God not a performance for human praise. Every week our Worship and Arts Team works together to provide worship environments for people to draw near to God, honor God, and to grow in their knowledge and love for God.

What is your church known for in the community?
We are known for our community service projects, including picking up trash at the annual Fall Fun Fest. We are known for our building being open to the community to use.

Does your church lean toward being an intrinsic (internal focused) or extrinsic (outreach focused) church?
Like every church, this is a constant struggle. But extrinsic (outreach focused) has a slight edge in the church body and staff, and is a large emphasis among the senior staff.

What is the Sr. Pastor/Teaching Pastor’s role in designing services?
Dave functions in an advisory/approval role for the overall service design. He doesn’t get into the details too much, although he will occasionally request specific elements that relate to parts of his message. Dave identifies the message topics for each worship service.

What is the Sr. Pastor’s leadership style?
Collaborative and supportive

How much is creativity and art valued?
Creativity is one of our values and art is a tool useful in many aspects of digital and other ministries. Creativity is one of our staff values. It is a way we express being made in the image of God and is highly encouraged. Art is able to connect with the heart and soul in a way that words alone cannot. Therefore, the arts are key to connecting children, students, and adults to God, and to His mission and church.

What are the expected work hours and what does a typical work week look like?
Full-time staff will typically work 40-50 hours a week. Staff will be at all worship services they have a role in and sometimes special services. Everyone attends Tuesday Staff Meetings and most are here 1 or 2 evenings a week with meetings or programming. Most staff take Friday and Saturday off but that is negotiable.
