About South Bay and the Position

From Gary Shiohama (Senior Pastor)

WHO WE ARE

Thank you for your interest in our position! We are truly in awe of what God has done and is doing at our church, and the time has come for us to add another pastor to our staff – this will be our sixth.

More than 26 years ago our church started out as a struggling band of 15-20 people, and today it has blossomed into a booming congregation of more than 1,000 adults who love Jesus, love His Word, love each other, love the lost, and love to serve. Along the way our church has been characterized by a special warmth that we credit in part, to the influence of those in our congregation from the islands of Hawaii. Along the way, we have also grown in diversity – not only ethnically, but generationally. On any given weekend, millennials and baby-boomers can be seen side-by-side serving in the various ministries of our church.

From the very start our mission has been two-fold – first to help people find Jesus, and second to help them follow Jesus, and we are endeavoring to do this all over the world. In recent years, we have sent out ministry teams to places like Japan, Uganda, and East Asia, and even to Rockport, TX, Florence, N.C., and Panama City, FL to do relief work through Samaritan’s Purse.

We currently offer three worship services (one on Saturday and two on Sunday) that are vibrant and stirring. We are intentional about leveraging the arts and preaching the uncompromising truth of God’s Word. Our day-to-day ministry is pastor-driven however, we are governed by a board of elders.

HISTORY

South Bay Community Church was founded by our senior pastor, Gary Shiohama on September 20, 1992. Prior to starting the church, Gary worked for the president of the Los Angeles City Council, owned a Mexican restaurant, and was the spokesman for the oil industry on the west coast.

For the first six years, the church met in a local community center and was dubbed “the church in a truck” because all of its belongings (stage, sound equipment, carpet, signage, cribs, etc.) were stored in the truck. And every Sunday tireless volunteers unloaded the truck in order for the church to hold its one service. In the fall of 1998, the church leased some space (12,000 sq. ft.) from Public Storage, and it started to grow. The church lost its lease after 12 years, and was homeless for more than three years. After much prayer, God provided the church with its current home (50,000 sq. ft.), and since moving in more than five years ago, the church has baptized nearly 300 people and more than doubled in size.

LOCATION & COMMUNITY

The church is located in Torrance, California, which is located in the heart of the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. The South Bay is home to more than three-quarters of a million people, and it is one of the most diverse areas of Southern California. Today a typical 3-bedroom home in the South Bay sells for around $750,000.
