KENWOOD BAPTIST Yesterday & Today

Kenwood Baptist Church, originally Evanston Baptist Church, was formed on February 12, 1911, in the Evanston area of Cincinnati. The church relocated to the Kenwood area of Cincinnati in 1961, taking on the new name with the move.

Kenwood has been a gospel-centric church in the community for decades. Kenwood is a healthy, safe, and loving congregation where many have found Christ, healing, and restoration in their lives. They embrace the richness of ethnic diversity and multi-generational families.

Kenwood places high value on deep biblical preaching and teaching and embraces the vital role of the Holy Spirit in transformed lives.  Kenwood takes the Great Commission seriously and consistently engages in relational outreach to the city.

Today, Kenwood is a local gathering of the global body of the Lord Jesus Christ. Kenwood includes twenty native languages, four generations of people, and dozens of neighborhoods around the city. The unity of the church is found in the shared confession that Jesus Christ is Lord.

KENWOOD'S VISION

In the last five years, the church has gone through a re-visioning process which led to reworking its vision statement:

As God's redeemed people, united by faith in Christ, and empowered by His Spirit, we worship God, live by His Word, and join His mission to bring hope to this world.

WORSHIPPING God

LIVING by His Word

JOINING God's MISSION in the world

Kenwood Baptist Church is experiencing a new-found momentum, and is in the midst of a four-million-dollar facility remodel and addition.

The church remained strong through the Coronavirus. Small groups continued meeting through Zoom and the worship services have been live-streamed since week one of the lockdown. The church discovered new ways to minister to the community in the midst of the pandemic and even initiated a capital campaign and building project.

STUDENT MINISTRY

At Kenwood Baptist, students matter!

The Student and Family Ministry was trending in a very positive and encouraging direction pre-coronavirus. The youth regularly gathered on Sunday mornings to pray with church members as they came to worship, engaged in local and global missions (Thailand), and had 30+ youth attending weekly gatherings. The volunteer leadership team was composed of six young adults.

The previous Student Pastor left approximately six months ago and a Student Intern and the volunteer team have worked hard to continue to build community during a challenging season. The pandemic did not slow them down, however. They continued to meet (online) and in person as soon as they were able. Their ministry has been modified with the revised leadership, but morale has remained high and the students and volunteer team are looking forward to meeting their new Student & Family Pastor.

Kenwood Baptist student ministry isn't just about students. While the new pastor will minister to youth and its leaders, the goal is that he or she will also build strong relationships with parents and be a resource for parents to nurture and disciple their teens.

The church believes the Student and Family Ministry must be rooted in Scripture, focused on discipleship, and open to the lost. The church also desires for the ministry to connect to the larger church body in worshipping the Lord, building up one another, and in outreach to the city. Kenwood is seeking a Student & Family pastor that will, "teach and pray, love and stay."

LEADERSHIP

Dr. David Palmer is a pastor-scholar. As an adjunct professor in NT at Gordon Conwell, David brings a tremendous depth of knowledge to the preaching and teaching ministry. As Senior Pastor, David is highly energetic, consistently positive in outlook, and forward-thinking. He has served at Kenwood for almost two decades, as an associate pastor first, and then as the Lead Pastor.

David is an encourager and equipper. He has a strong concern for the next generation. David loves the Lord, His Word, and the church.

Associate Pastor Scott Burns has been at Kenwood for six years and brings approximately fifteen years of experience with youth and family ministry. Scott is eager to encourage and support the new student & family ministry pastor.

As a supervisor, Scott operates as a coach, eager to enhance each person's individual gifting and strengths. He's open to creative and new initiatives, and gives space to those under his leadership to make decisions and lead their area.

Kenwood Baptist Church shifted to an elder model of leadership approximately three years ago and is still fine-tuning how this new model leads and interacts with other teams. The staff is active in all aspects of leadership and ministry, including vision and strategic planning. The church is currently led by ten elders (eight men & two women).
