WORTHINGTON CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Columbus, OH

HISTORY & CURRENT STATUS

Worthington Christian Church began as a church planted by other Christian churches in the Columbus area in 1975. Don Miller, a local businessman, led the church through the first few years while meeting in a school just north of Worthington. Eventually, the church acquired property on Hwy 23 north of the outer belt in Columbus, where they built the first worship center. Several building programs and renovations later, Worthington Christian Church continues to thrive in this space with an average weekend worship attendance of more than 1300, gathering over two services at 9:00 and 10:30 AM each Sunday.

Worthington Christian's vision is to "Follow Jesus Together." The church is passionate about reaching those who do not yet know Jesus. In 2019, the church met with Intentional Churches to help them identify some visionary initiative projects to focus on their “one," or the persons in their community who don't yet have a relationship with Christ. As a target demographic, they identified their "one" as the 36-year-old male, believing that they can get the entire family if they can reach men with young families in their area. They strive to accomplish this evangelistic work by encouraging relational outreach among their members and through Community Impact Partnerships with organizations such as Pregnancy Decision Health Center, Habitat for Humanity, local school supports, and Lifeline Christian Missions, among others. They are keenly aware of the tremendous growth in their surrounding area and the need for healthy Christ-followers to be engaged in the community.

Recently, the church has been prayerfully working toward "re-envisioning" its buildings and property to better serve its members, their families, and their community. This initiative launched in 2023 and is called REACH. More detailed information can be found on their REACH Initiative webpage, which includes a brief overview of why they felt led to move forward with it and some specifics about the vision. All aspects of the REACH Initiative are born out of Worthington Christian's desire to reach those who have yet to know Jesus, or as illustrated in the Parable of the Lost Sheep, to reach their "One."

The church has a vision to launch another campus north of them within the next five years. They believe this new site, located in a fast-growing area, will help them even more effectively reach those moving to their city who have yet to know Christ.

Worthington Christian Church originated with the Christian Church/Church of Christ, rooted within the Restoration Movement. Today, they are a nondenominational independent Christian Church. To learn more about the church's beliefs, click HERE.

REACH INITIATIVE

Worthington Christian Church has already renovated its children and youth facilities as part of the REACH Initiative. Most recently, the church updated its existing worship space with new finishes, expanded seating capacity, new theater-style seats, new AVL systems, and LED screens. This next phase was completed in Summer 2024. The video below provides a visual rendering of the proposed renovation before it was completed.

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

The Worship Ministry at Worthington Christian is healthy and is known for musical excellence. A team of gifted volunteers is committed to leading the church's musical worship and supporting it through the technical systems. Currently, the worship team consists of twelve volunteers, including drummers, vocalists, guitarists, bassists, and those who play keys. The technical team is comprised of thirteen volunteers, with 5-6 needed to support their three services on any given weekend. This team consists of audio engineers, graphics operators, camera operators, and those who run the video switcher. The ministry also occasionally uses a Worship Choir to support the congregation. About 40 volunteers actively participate in this group.

The new Worship Minister will oversee all aspects of the Worship Ministry, including the abovementioned teams. They will do this with the support of a part-time Worship Administrative Assistant, a full-time Technical Director, and a Creative Arts Minister who can provide creativity and support as needed.

The Worship Minister plays a pivotal role in creating a team-based Worship Ministry. This person will guide the teams to lead in musical worship, fostering congregational singing and participation. The Worship Minister is not a one-person show but a leader of leaders, equipping and empowering other gifted individuals to lead. Their ultimate goal is to build and train teams to lead, all with the purpose of guiding people to "Follow Jesus Together."

The ideal candidate for the Worship Minister position is a skilled musician with solid vocal ability. They should be relational, humble, and, most importantly, a team player. This person should have a passion for identifying and developing the potential in others. On and off the platform, the Worship Pastor should be marked by authenticity and be actively engaged in the life of the church. Worthington Christian Church is committed to reaching those who don't yet know Jesus and the new Worship Minister should share this passion.

While the team is currently filled with capable and committed people, expanding the group is an ever-growing need. Especially as the church looks toward a future campus launch, the new Worship Minister should develop a strategy for recruitment and onboarding new team members.

More than just a musician, the Worship Minister should have the heart of a shepherd, loving others and inviting them into community. They should lead with godly humility, loving the Lord and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This person should be deeply committed to the church's mission of reaching out to the community and bringing people together in worship.
