Village Church - Canada

HISTORY & CURRENT STATUS

Village Church started in April 2009 with 16 people meeting in a townhouse – led by Mark Clark, dreaming and praying for what a new church in the South Surrey area of Vancouver would look like.

The first public service was held on January 24, 2010 and since then Village has grown into a multi-site church with locations across Canada.

By the fall of 2011, with an average weekend attendance of 750 people, Village Church began to realize that God was doing something unique and really unheard of in Canada.

In the summer of 2014, the Langley North location was added. And in 2015, Village Church celebrated the 500th person baptized.

In 2016, the Langley South location launched, and attendance at Village passed 5,000 people!

In 2017, Village celebrated the 1,000th person baptized, and Village Church Calgary launched.

In 2018, the 1,400th person was baptized, and in 2019, Village Church Coquitlam launched.

In January 2020, Village Church Abbotsford was launched and early in the pandemic the Online site was launched that is now core to the Village Church mission.

This year has been a very busy and transitional year at Village Church. In February, Founder/Senior Pastor Mark Clark was called to a new ministry in California. In April, the GTA (Toronto) West location opened and there are currently three other sites in development for 2022. (Winnipeg, GTA East, and Vancouver)

Village Church is experiencing continued engagement at all sites and finances are running above prior years.

The Village Church elders, staff and congregation believe many of the best days are yet to come with excitement building for what Village 2.0 will be!

OUR MISSION

We exist to see people transformed into fully devoted followers of Jesus.

OUR CORE BELIEFS

We believe that theology and doctrine are priorities for the church and the Christian life. The following list represents essential Village Church beliefs that are proclaimed boldly and unashamedly as part of the historic Christian faith.

The Bible: We believe the entire Bible is the complete Word of God, that all sixty-six books, as originally given, comprising the Old and New Testament, were verbally inspired by the Spirit of God, and were entirely free from error; that the Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice and the basis of all Christian teaching and unity.

God: We believe in one God, who is an infinite and intelligent Spirit; perfect in wisdom, love, and judgment; Creator and Sovereign of all things; holy, eternal, and self-existing in three equal persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We believe that God the Father reigns with providential care over all life and history, hears and answers prayer, initiated salvation by sending his Son; that he is Father to those who by faith accept his Son, Jesus, as Lord and Saviour.

We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, in his eternal existence with the Father in pre-incarnate glory, in his virgin birth, sinless life, substitutionary death, burial, bodily resurrection and appearances, triumphant ascension, present ministry as our Advocate, and imminent return.

We believe in the deity and personality of the Holy Spirit who convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; who as the Spirit of Truth, magnifies the person and word of Christ; who regenerates, indwells, sanctifies, strengthens, equips with spiritual gifts, and leads into all truth those who believe in Jesus Christ.

We believe that Jesus and his apostles explained the present work of the Holy Spirit and that doctrine and experiences that deviate from the Bible pattern are to be avoided and regarded as not originating from God.

Angels: We believe God created a distinct order of spirit beings to worship and serve God and act as messengers to and protectors of human beings. Village Church also believes that Satan, a fallen angel, exists as an evil personality, the originator of sin, the archenemy of God and man, and that he leads his evil angels to exercise great, though limited, power in the world; that Christ on the cross, triumphed over Satan and he will suffer final defeat before Jesus Christ at the end.

Humans: We believe that humankind was divinely created in the image of God; that they sinned in Eden and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. As a result, all human beings are born with a sinful nature and sin against God in thought, word, and deed.

Salvation: We believe that personal salvation is by the sovereign, electing grace of God; that Christ voluntarily suffered physical death by crucifixion to satisfy God’s demand for judgment of sin and to provide justification for the repentant sinner who rests by faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ and in his work of redemption.

We believe God seeks to progressively shape all those he has saved into the likeness of Christ by means of the scriptures, prayer, blessings, suffering, and the influence of other believers.

We believe that all those who have obeyed God’s call shall be divinely preserved and finally perfected at the Lord’s return.

Future Things: We believe in the personal, bodily, and glorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the resurrection and judgment of the just and the unjust, in the eternal blessedness of the believer, and in the everlasting, conscious punishment of the unbeliever.

The Universal Church: We believe the church is a spiritual organism comprised of all believers in Jesus Christ since Pentecost, and that each member has been baptized in the Spirit by the Lord Jesus Christ for the purpose of uniting every believer into the one body of which Christ is the Head.

All believers are commanded by Christ to love one another as he has loved, and are commissioned to make disciples of all nations by baptizing and teaching them to observe everything that Jesus commanded His disciples.

The Local Church: We believe that the local church is a self-governing fellowship of Christ-followers that gather together under the Lordship of Jesus Christ to be taught the Word of God, encouraged in prayer and discipleship, participate in the Lord’s Supper, and equipped to serve one another in love.

Ordinances: We believe there are two ordinances for believers regularly observed in the New Testament:

Baptism – the immersion of a believer in water in obedience to Christ’s command, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, demonstrating publicly the believer’s identification with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection.

The Lord’s Supper – the taking of the bread and the cup by believers together as a continuing memorial of the body and shed blood of Christ. It is an act of thanksgiving to him, and serves to unite his people and to declare his death by which we are forgiven until he returns.

Civil Government: We believe that civil government is a separate institution from the church and is allowed by God for the good order of society and that secular authorities are to be prayed for, conscientiously honoured, and obeyed, except in that which is opposed to the Word of God.

Marriage: We believe God created man and woman, and that marriage as instituted by God is the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.

LEADERSHIP

Our founding Senior Pastor, Mark Clark, was tasked as the church grew to be a high-level communicator and a high-level organizational leader. A few years ago, a subtle shift was made that allowed Mark to focus on teaching first and then to lead from a vision standpoint. The executive duties were then partitioned to several other executive leaders.

In this current season, the elders, staff, and the congregation are all moving in the same direction and understanding as a Mesa Model of ministry leadership is created and experienced.

In this "Mesa Model," there is no longer one peak, a leader at the top of the organizational chart. This staffing structure points to a team, not an individual.

There is now room for 2 senior leaders in this structure who both live and lead out of their specific lane, gifts, strengths, and talents.

Mesa Model Distinctives

1. It is built on principles, more than a personality.

2. It rises and falls on trust.

3. It provides dexterity for a team in transition.

4. It recognizes that everyone can point to the lead, and the lead constantly points to the other leads. (Jesus and his disciples)

5. It disperses the bullseye on any single lead person.

6. The best idea wins.

7. Consensus counts.

8. True inter-dependence is expressed inwardly and outwardly realizing we “could not” do what we do without each other.

9. It embraces the biggest fan mindset.

10. It allows leaders to disagree privately and remain on the same page publicly.

11. It has clearly defined roles and leadership lanes.

The two circles in this Mesa Model at Village are the people who facilitate and guide this top layer of Senior Leadership. Both of these circles are part of the elder team with joint responsibilty for vision and strategy at Village Church.

Village Church is now seeking leaders to join this expression of organization, and to assume the Senior Pastor, Ministries and Staff and Senior Pastor, Teaching and Advancement.

CHURCH CULTURE

Village Church is Canada’s only national multisite with 7 physical sites, 3 in development and an Online site all with a Lead Pastor and dedicated team.

Village does not own any of their current meeting locations and they lease a 25,000 SF Ministry Centre and production studio. They do own a large piece of land with future development plans.

Village is teaching team based, with video to all venues. Except for the initial capture, every other service across all sites is video – including at the “main” site (although they are careful to never call it that so it does not portray an “us and them” or “central” implication).

Two of the sites are live worship. All other sites are cinema–based where the music/worship portion is also on screen in locked, full stage shot with a surround-sound – immersive experience.

Village Church Distinctives

Gospel

The gospel offers hope and meaning to our lives. It's about the fact that God loves us so much that he sent his son Jesus to die for our sins and rise from death to transform us. This means our hope is not in what we do for God, but what God, through Christ, has done for us. At Village Church, the gospel informs everything about who we are and what we do. We want to live authentically as imperfect people who have been redeemed by and found purpose in Jesus.

Community

God builds communities of faith by uniting the people he saves and motivating them to love each other and share the gospel. In a world that can be isolating and fragmented, this makes the church a breath of fresh air. It unites people regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity, class, or history. So wherever you're at in life, there's a place for you in Village Church.

Culture

Rather than separate ourselves from the world, we want to be a positive influence in it. Whatever we do as a church, we strive for excellence and want to engage with every level of our culture to see it transformed by Jesus. We want to represent the truths of Christianity to the world in insightful, creative, and gracious ways.

To us, fully devoted followers of Jesus means seeing people transformed into disciples. At Village Church, we focus on these eight attributes:

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

Challenges will come in establishing the new leadership model, as Village Church has not been formally organized in this co-distributed leadership structure.

Tremendous opportunities for the Senior Pastor positions will be found in joining a talented and unified Village team. The staff and Lead Site Pastors are eager for mentoring, leadership and encouragement in continuing to grow as they pursue God's plans for Village Church.
