HISTORY & CURRENT

Hillside Church of Marin is a growing, Christ-centered church located in Marin County, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.  Hillside was founded in 1954 and through the years has maintained a steady focus on reaching and discipling people in our ever-changing community. Hillside is located in one of the most secular counties in the United States. In this highly secular location, God has always led Hillside to find ways to love, serve, and reach the different communities of Marin County. The latest example of this came in 2018 when God opened the door for Hillside to adopt and restart a struggling sister congregation in San Rafael.   The dream of Hillside is to see Marin county transformed by the power of the Spirit and the truth of the Gospel.

The right candidate will help us build into the future of Hillside and the communities in Marin as we emerge from a difficult season of global pandemic and polarization. We are looking for a servant-leader for our NextGen ministry (Kids & Student Ministries) who "gets"all that families have been through and is filled with the hope and encouragement of Christ. This person must be action oriented and have a passion for equipping parents, discipling kids & students and inviting the church to participate in the spiritual formation of families.

MISSION & BELIEFS

Our Mission

To see lives and communities transformed as people are reconciled to God through the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of the Gospel.

Our Strategy

...is to create spaces where people are encouraged and equipped to pursue intimacy with God, grow in community, and love others.

PURSUE INTIMACY WITH GOD // God is real and we can have a real relationship with him. Through personal relationships, engaging worship, and solid biblical teaching we seek to introduce people to an ever growing connection with Jesus who told us that he is the way to God.

GROW IN COMMUNITY // Spiritual growth almost always happens in the context of a community.  We are not solitary pilgrims on a lonely road; we are a family growing in the context of our relationships.  We work to create communities conducive to growth.

LOVE OTHERS // The Christian life is all about giving: giving love, giving hope, giving resources and on and on the giving goes. When there is one who gives, it is nice. When there is a community that gives, it's a party. By investing in the lives of others, we express our thanks to God and our belief that Jesus Christ is the hope of the world.

NEXTGEN

MINISTRY APPROACH

Hillside Church has been an Orange Strategy church for 12 years. This strategy has made Hillside known locally as a church for families because of solid kids and student ministry. We are a group averaging 50 kids and youth and 200 adults on a Sunday. Student Ministry has been gaining momentum over the last five years. Our Kids Ministry has been in need of a refresh for several years. Elementary ministry is rebounding but birth through Kindergarten ages have been slow to return to corporate experiences following COVID. The need for a "re-envisioning and relaunch" for kids ministry is evident. Student Ministry is thriving under our current Student Ministry Director who is now ready to move into an Associate Pastor role sometime within the next season of ministry. This move allows us to restructure, combining leadership of Kids and Student Ministry into one NextGen Pastor position. We believe this - along with some part time director positions will best position us to impact Marin for Christ.

MULTIPLICATION

Hillside has a heart for church multiplication. We launched the Lucas Valley location in 2019 but in the wake of COVID have consolidated services to one location while we focus on rebuilding and regaining momentum for a relaunch. We have hired a site pastor for Lucas Valley and are actively engaged in a "build here, launch there" strategy, with the hope to launch later this year. The NextGen Pastor will work with the leadership team to develop the strategy and team that will lead kids ministry at both sites, first at our Corte Madera site and then at our Lucas Valley site when we are ready to relaunch. The NextGen Pastor will have the opportunity to hire part-time directors for each site as ministry grows.

LEADERSHIP

Lead Pastor, Steve Pridemore

Steve Pridemore is Hillside’s Lead Pastor. Steve grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where his parents were missionaries for twenty years. Steve graduated from Wheaton College, just outside Chicago, with a multidisciplinary degree focused on philosophy, art and art history. He then spent a year in the Middle East and North Africa where he studied Arabic and helped develop materials to educate churches about the people of the Sudan. Shortly after returning to the United States he moved to Mill Valley where he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Theological Seminary. Before coming to Hillside he spent several years working for the David B Gold Foundation in San Francisco. In 2006 Steve began working at Hillside as the Pastor of Spiritual Formation and served as Hillside’s Executive Pastor until March of 2014 when he assumed the position of Lead Pastor.

Much of Steve’s ministry is shaped by his own journey to faith. Though he grew up in the church he could not bring himself to believe in God. “I saw God as a beautiful idea, but I had no reason to believe it was a true idea.” That changed in college during a winter backpacking trip. “I think God decided it was time for me to believe. I experienced an undeniable sense of his presence, deeper than my objections and doubts. That has never left me.” Steve has spent the last twenty years exploring the implications of a world in which God is not only a beautiful idea but a true idea. Everything he does as a pastor is an attempt to live and share the beauty and the truth of God.

Both Steve and his wife Jessica love Marin and the people who live there. They were married in January ’06 and now live in Novato. Their son, Kyle, is 9 and their daughter, Claire, is 8. Jessica is currently a TK teacher. Steve is always exploring or building something new. His hobbies include travel, backpacking, and all things food and wine. Together they like to explore, travel, and play.

Hillside is a staff-led church with a board that sets big picture policy and provides accountability for the lead pastor.

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

VISIONARY LEADER

NextGen Ministry is in need of an energetic leader who can assess and realign the ministry to increase the impact and effectiveness in connecting and equipping parents while growing kids and teens in their spiritual journey. As we emerge into a new season, the congregation is ready for a new vision and new energy, particulary in kids ministry. We are ready to invest signifcant energy in reaching families and are looking for a leader with the passion to lead that effort.

EQUIPPER TO FAMILIES

Hillside Church is located in Marin County where the culture has a strong push against families and kids to be growing in their faith.  The NextGen Pastor will need to create “new” and innovative ways to attract and equip families on how to spiritually grow together.  This will require a leader who is relational and has energy to reach the unchurched and get them connected to the church family.

INSPIRING TEAM BUILDER

NextGen Ministry is need of a leader who can inspire people to want to serve within this ministry area. NextGen needs a ministry champion who is able to bring creativity, passion, intentionality, and a pastoral presence to the ministry and volunteer teams.

LOCATION & DEMOGRAPHICS

Hillside Church of Marin is located in Corte Madera in Marin County. Marin County is one of the most affluent counties in the United States in terms of property values and per capita income, and is also possibly one of the most culturally liberal. It also has one of the lowest percentages of church attendance, estimated between 3 and 10 percent. It is into this milieu of cultures, spirituality, economics and world renowned outdoor activities that Hillside church is seeking to be ambassadors of Christ, inviting people to be reconciled with God and one another.

Corte Madera is only 12 miles north of San Francisco which offers a huge variety of cultural, sporting, sight-seeing and entertainment events. Corte Madera offers more than beautiful California scenery––it’s home to two of Marin County’s finest outdoor shopping centers that have a variety of boutiques and restaurants.

Nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy here, too. Shorebird Marsh, a thirty-one-acre wildlife habitat, also a prime spot for bird watching. And for hikers, at the southeastern edge of town, you’ll find the Ring Mountain Preserve, a gorgeous open space overlooking the San Francisco Bay with wide-open hiking trails and views of San Francisco.
