HISTORY & CURRENT STATUS

Central Congregational Church, a member of the United Church of Christ, was established in 1852. An Open and Affirming Global Mission Church, Central is open to all regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, mental facility, economic circumstance, or physical condition. We strive to be a community of God's people in a way that calls each of us to active discipleship through worship, caring, sharing, and outreach.

Central has a long-standing commitment to mission and action, so the church is always ready to help the helpless and give hope to the hopeless – locally, nationally, and internationally. Central has not only formed ongoing partnerships with Camp Street Ministries, Amos House, and Sojourner House and many other local non-profit organizations serving vulnerable populations; but also sponsored refugee families and sent mission workers and aid to Haiti, New Orleans, South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation, and other areas in need.

One of the unique ways that Central engages in the local community is Hamilton House, which is owned by CCC and donated for the use of one of the first Senior Citizen Centers in RI. This enables those living at home to have a hot meal, socialization, and adult education as well as fitness classes, etc. so they can remain independent and yet not isolated.

Central participates in, and often hosts, the Interfaith Thanksgiving celebrations which bring together Episcopal, Baptist, and Jewish congregations, local Black churches, Catholic parishes, and the Vedanta Society. They have also hosted Iftar to share the tradition of Ramadan across the Providence faith community. Chapel Hall, a communal space adjacent to the sanctuary, has also been the home for the Eid Celebration (end of Ramadan).

Central has been known for its thoughtful and timely sermons that inspire members long after they have left the Worship Service. Sermons that are able to thread the needle on issues surrounding politics, emphasizing our commonalities as Christians rather than our differences have been an important part of how the church has been able to maintain its membership and influence. While the critical mass of members appreciate this approach, there are strong voices in the congregation expressing criticism that the ministry is either too progressive or not progressive enough.

The church has emerged from the pandemic in solid financial shape, with a balanced budget and a strong endowment, with 535 members, of whom around 300 are active. A major indicator of the support of the congregation was the ability to complete a $1.2M campaign to renovate Chapel Hall to offer a modern space, welcoming and functional for both our own events as well as those offered to the local community. This project was completed this past fall.

The physical space is in excellent shape, although a building of its age always has issues that need to be addressed. There is a high degree of consensus that the renovation, which also included an art gallery and adjacent restrooms, achieved its goal of positioning Central as a lively, active church poised for future growth.

The people who attend Central are generally well-educated professionals who are civically engaged. The church does draw from a wide geographic area beyond Providence, including parts of Southeastern Massachusetts.

THEOLOGICAL DISTINCTIVES

Christianity is the name of a journey, a journey not solely of personal contemplation, but one of communal venture that is the Church. It is a journey open to everyone, regardless of their condition, regardless of their past. All that is required is a decision to follow Him.

As a congregation we pledge to the Salem Covenant: We covenant with the Lord and with one another and do bind ourselves in the presence of God, to walk together in all the ways which are revealed to us by God, as the Word is made known to us.

We strive to be a community of God’s people where Jesus Christ calls each of us to active discipleship. We work to increase our love of God and neighbor through worship, caring, sharing, and outreach.

Central is open and affirming, with a strong belief that we are all children of God.

Central remains open to candidates outside of the UCC. That said, as a congregational church it would be expected that our new Senior Minister bind themselves to the Salem Covenant and have theological beliefs in-line with our statement of faith that acknowledges the risen Christ as the ultimate example of God’s grace, a gift freely given to all.

LEADERSHIP

The next Senior Minister will follow the long and faithful tenure of Rebecca Spencer who has served as the Senior Minister at Central for 35 years. The leadership style of the church is strong and decisive and centered on the Senior Minister. The Senior Minister works closely with staff and lay-leadership of key committees - Deacons, Prudential, Membership, Mission and Action - to ensure cohesion of communication and vision. Decision-making at every level is the product of consensus-driven conversations.

Central is governed by its bylaws. This document of 22 pages, most recently revised and approved by a vote of the congregation at large in the spring of 2023, reflects both the deepest traditions and the most modern sensibilities of the organization and its membership. The bylaws outline each of our many committees, granting ultimate authority to the Board of Deacons with its charge to manage the spiritual aspects of the church, and The Prudential Committee, charged with the financial health and continued operation of our ministry. The Senior Minister has worked closely with the leadership of both groups to ensure consensus around priorities and decision-making. We have an annual meeting each June where budget decisions and other matters before the church are voted on by the members of the congregation.

Staff includes a full-time Associate Minister, Organist and Choir Leader, and Youth Minister. Central’s excellent office staff consists of an Office Manager, Communications Director and Sexton.

THE CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

This is a great opportunity for a forward thinking, strategically minded leader, who has an appreciation for the legacy and tradition of a historic and influential church, who is comfortable leading in the tension of valuing both established traditions and new ideas.

Some of the upcoming challenges that you'll have the opportunity to lead through include:

EXPANDING MEMBERSHIP

The next Senior Minister of the congregation faces a significant challenge and opportunity in expanding membership and reconnecting with existing members who have drifted away due to cultural challenges to mainline Protestantism. Achieving these goals requires a delicate balance between honoring long-time traditions and exploring new approaches to attract the next generation.

To address this challenge, the new leader must craft a strategic vision that is inclusive of all members, while being proactive in identifying and addressing the unique needs of diverse groups within the congregation. This requires creating a supportive and welcoming environment that values both established traditions and new ideas. With commitment, sensitivity, and creativity, the new leader can pave the way for a thriving future for Central.

REVITALIZING YOUTH & CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS

The new Senior Minister must also revitalize the church's youth and Religious Education programs, which have declined significantly over the past three years. By investing in these programs, the church can engage younger members of the community and foster a meaningful and engaging experience. With a supportive congregation, strong financial position, and attractive new space, the new minister has an ideal platform to revitalize these programs and strengthen the church's connection with youth and children.
