FAMILY MINISTRY LEAD
AT CROSSROADS CHRISTIAN CHURCH
NEWBURGH, IN
www.cccgo.com
OUR STORY
In 1967, a downtown church started a house church on the growing east side of Evansville. The house church was first known as Plaza Park Christian Church. Two years later, the church built its first building and became known as Cullen Avenue Christian Church. The church grew and expanded in that location for the next 29 years, eventually having five weekend services. In 1998, the church moved to a new property and building in Newburgh and became known as Crossroads Christian Church.
Crossroads has experienced its share of victories and challenges over the years. There have been seasons of great fruitfulness and seasons that felt more like drought. One consistent thread has been a faithful, godly group of elders who shepherd the staff and congregation with wisdom, integrity, and compassion.
In 2018, Crossroads walked though a difficult leadership transition that resulted in a church split. A year and a half later, with a brand new lead pastor, the church navigated the COVID pandemic and all of the church-related challenges that accompanied it.
Currently, Crossroads is in the place of rediscovering who God has called them to be as His bride in their unique location. Their vision is to help people live and love like Jesus. They would say, they are committed
- to becoming a vibrant community of worshipers making Jesus known
- growing biblically-rooted, resilient families
- intentionally developing disciples and leaders
- making servant-led impact in local and global communities
MISSION
MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS
Before Jesus returned to heaven, He gave His followers a clear mission: Go and make disciples of all nations. The Church, as the body of believers, has the privilege and responsibility of carrying out this mission.
"GO and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you." MATTHEW 28:19-20
VISION
LIVE AND LOVE LIKE JESUS
When a person chooses to follow Jesus by accepting Him as Savior and making Him Lord, they make a deliberate decision to LIVE and LOVE like Jesus. At Crossroads we sense God calling us to this as our marching orders, the unique way we join Him in His mission.
"Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did."1 JOHN 2:6
CULTURE
The culture of Crossroads is shaped as its people live out four core values.
We shepherd like Jesus.
Jesus is the good Shepherd who lays down his life for His sheep. His love, compassion, and salvation are for all people, regardless of gender, race, ability, culture, education, or status (Luke 15:3-7). Following His example, we lovingly care for all those God has entrusted to us. We know them, feed them, lead them, and protect them. We faithfully put their needs ahead of our own (John 10:11-13).
We are generous like Jesus.
We recognize that we are blessed in order that we may bless others. We are stewards of the resources, skills, experiences, abilities, and opportunities God has given us, both personally and corporately (1 Peter 4:10). We approach life and ministry as contributors, not consumers (2 Corinthians 9:6-15). We give courageously and sacrificially for it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).
We equip and empower like Jesus.
Each member of the body is called to do good works (Ephesians 2:10). We choose to equip and empower God’s people to do this good work to 1) build up the body, 2) move the body toward unity, and 3) foster maturity within the body (Ephesians 4:12). Jesus was sent and has commissioned us as well (John 20:21, Matthew 28:18-20).
We are kingdom-centered like Jesus.
In light of Jesus’ command to seek first the kingdom of God, we prioritize kingdom understanding. We believe that the greatest joy and purpose in life is found in bringing God’s kingdom here to earth. We embrace our calling as servants, both inside and outside the walls of the church. We recognize that Crossroads is part of the global church body, and we are committed to seeing Jesus’ mission fulfilled in local, regional, and global contexts. We choose to magnify the name of Jesus and not the name of any individual or church body (Matthew 6:10).
LEADERSHIP
Lead Pastor
Phil Heller is a preacher’s kid who was raised in Mayesville, KY. He attended Kentucky Christian University where he graduated with a degree in Bible and ministry. Several years later he completed a Masters in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Phil served as the high school pastor and then the family ministry lead at Crossroads from 1996-2002. Over the next seventeen years, Phil served in a variety of ministry roles at two other churches, one in Louisville, KY and one in Noblesville, IN.
Phil returned to Crossroads in 2019 as the Lead Pastor. His previous experience at Crossroads and his relational strengths made him an excellent candidate to lead the congregation through a time of confusion and deep hurt.
Phil is a model of integrity, and he has the heart of a shepherd. He is faithfully leading the staff and congregation in discovering who God has called Crossroads to be in the days and years to come.
Phil has been married to his wife Christie for thirty years. They have three adult children–Jenna, Cade, and Kendyll. In his free time, Phil enjoys running, spending time with family and friends, and cheering on the UK Wildcats.
Executive Director of Formation
Aislin Carter is a born and raised Evansville girl. She grew up at Crossroads Christian Church where her faith was deeply impacted by the staff, volunteer leaders, and formative experiences with the youth group. Aislin attended Kentucky Christian University where she majored in elementary education and Bible and minored in music. After graduating from KCU, Aislin worked in Port-de-Paix, Haiti for five years with Sonlight Ministries.
In 2005, Aislin returned home to Evansville, got married, and joined the staff of Crossroads as the Kids Music and Worship Director. She has continued to serve on staff for the past nineteen years, filling a number of different roles. For the past three years, she has served as the Executive Director of Formation, overseeing the Family, Adult, and Worship Ministry teams. Because Crossroads is home and the church played a significant role in her own spiritual formation, Aislin is deeply passionate about helping others at Crossroads know, love, and follow Jesus. One of her favorite ministry areas is the King’s Kids student choir, which she has led throughout the duration of her time at Crossroads.
Aislin is married to Dan and they have two sons—Kaden (age 14) and Joel (age 11). In her free time, you’ll find Aislin cheering for Kaden on the basketball court and supporting Joel in all things dramatic and musical. She also enjoys reading, baking, and spending time outdoors. The lake is her happy place and she waterskis exactly one time every summer...just to prove that she still can!

CHURCH, TEAM, POSITION
Crossroads is a church with one location and two identical weekend services. On Sundays, there is Crossroads Kids programming (birth- 5th grade) during each of the weekend services. Youth programming (called YTH) takes place on Sunday afternoons/evenings. Middle School and High School students meet separately for worship, teaching, and small groups.
Crossroads is an elder-led, staff empowered ministry. They are role/policy governed. The elders provide spiritual and doctrinal oversight, shepherding, and prayer covering. They discern where God is leading the congregation, and they empower the staff and leaders to develop and implement the strategy to move in the right direction.
Historically, the demographic of the church has been primarily white, middle and upper class. There is starting to be a demographic change with more racial and socio-economic diversity in the church and ministries.
Crossroads Christian Church is known in the community for:
- A week of the summer called Camp Alive - a mash-up of VBS and Arts Camp for preschool and elementary students.
- Launching non-profits like Community One, The Foundry Center for the Arts, and Momentum Yes
- Local outreach, specifically partnerships with Glenwood Leadership Academy (K-8 school) and Potter’s Wheel Ministry, both on the south side of Evansville
At Crossroads, the Family Ministry team is a part of the Formation Team. The Formation Team is made up of the Family Ministry, Adult Ministry, and Worship Teams. The Family Ministry Team exists to create opportunities and environments to partner with families in the shepherding, connection, and discipleship of the family unit and its members. They strive to equip families through age and stage appropriate ministries and they encourage every family member to “Live and Love Like Jesus.” Crossroads is not looking for a change in this ministry philosophy, but they are looking for someone who can bring energy and vision to see the philosophy implemented in practical ways. Some of their key formation practices include worship, prayer, Bible study, and gathering in both small group communities and large group gatherings.
The Family Ministry Lead is responsible for overseeing the Family Ministry Team and the associated ministries. He/She will have five direct reports, the YTH Director (6th-12th grade), Kids Director (birth-5th grade), Mother’s Morning Out Program Director, Family Ministry Coordinator, and College Ministry volunteer leaders. Other members of the team, though not direct reports, include the YTH Associate Director, Kids Associate Director, and Kids Club Coordinator.

CHALLENGES:
The immediate challenge of this position will be bringing unifying focused, age-specific ministries in order to better serve the broader family unit. This team needs a leader with clear vision and great team-building skills. Recruiting, equipping, and empowering volunteers is another area that the Family Ministry Lead will need to focus on when first arriving.
OPPORTUNITIES:
Crossroads offers a great opportunity for a leader who cares about working with multiple teams, investing in young leaders, and creating and implementing a family ministry philosophy within a church. In this position, there are opportunities to grow and build teams, invest in high capacity volunteers, and shape a family ministry to reach a community through Living and Loving Like Jesus. The Family Ministry Team is a solid team, with seasoned leadership, great facilities, a great location. They desire to see the church reach the community within a 10 mile radius of the church.
LOCATION & DEMOGRAPHICS
The Evansville/Newburgh area feels, in some ways, like a small town. It also offers a variety of opportunities that feel more like a bigger town–restaurants, shopping, parks, healthcare, concerts, universities, and sporting events. Evansville is centrally located between St. Louis, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Nashville.
There are a number of residents who were born and raised in Evansville and have chosen to remain as adults. There are also a number of residents who have transferred to the area due to jobs, low cost of living, or wanting to live near family. Opportunities for connection and community abound through social, civic, and faith-based organizations. Newburgh is a great place for families!
