Children's Ministry Director

At New Covenant Bible Church

Cedar Rapids, IA

HISTORY

The history of New Covenant Bible Church (NCBC) can best be summarized by our mission “to honor God as a family of growing disciples.”

God’s faithfulness has been evident from our humble beginnings in the 1940s right up to the present. The small group of Christians who gathered in homes during the summer of 1948 to study God’s Word and to pray were probably unaware at the time of the significance of their actions. In early 1949, this body of believers known as First Covenant Church met for the first time in a home basement. The church was formally organized by 21 charter members on February 5, 1950.

In 1981, the leadership of First Covenant developed a 25-year plan to focus on future growth and outreach. That same year, the church’s 150 families voted to purchase an elementary school in Cedar Rapids as its new home. In 1987, First Covenant Church officially became New Covenant Bible Church. The church experienced significant spiritual and numerical growth during the ensuing years, and a new worship center, as well as additional adult and youth classrooms, were built on the elementary school site in the late 1990s.

In the spring of 2005, due to continued growth and limited expansion possibilities, the NCBC family purchased 55 acres of land in northeast Cedar Rapids. For the second time in 20 years, the church body stepped out in faith, making the decision to relocate. Construction began in the fall of 2009 in the middle of a major economic recession. On Sunday, August 28, 2011, worship services were held in the new facility for the very first time.

God is indeed faithful! We invite you to come and join us as we seek to honor Him as a family of growing disciples.

Current Status

New Covenant Bible Church is looking for a Children's Ministry Director to oversee birth through early childhood ministry directors and lead the elementary aged kids (K-5th grade).

NCBC has an attractive, well-maintained facility on approximately 55 acres of land that is visible from nearby Interstate 380. The church is strategically and uniquely positioned to reach thousands of people in Cedar Rapids and its surrounding communities for Jesus.

A warm, inviting, and caring atmosphere greets folks who enter the church’s doors. The facility’s main entrance leads to an expansive area dubbed “Main Street” that runs the entire length of the building, encouraging conversation and relationship building. To the left of Main Street is an 1,100 seat worship center and music rehearsal spaces that facilitates teaching and worship. To the right of Main Street are nurseries, children’s and youth spaces, adult classrooms, and a prayer room that facilitate spiritual growth and congregational care. At the far end of the building is the Main Street Café.

On any given Sunday at New Covenant, over 1,200 people (including adults, youth, and children) are welcomed into the building. The worship and message are Bible-based, authentic, and applicable to daily living.

New Covenant Children's Ministry

“Our youth aren’t the church of tomorrow; they’re the church of today.”

Fun, safe, Jesus-centered, kid-focused environments

Our Children are the church of today and our Children’s Ministry team focuses on creating environments that facilitate a growing walk with the Lord.

FOR BABIES THROUGH 5TH GRADE

Jesus loves children and desires for them to come to Him and so do we! It’s our desire to complement parents’ efforts as they raise their child to follow Jesus and become who He designed them to be. The programming focuses on ministries, such as corporate worship and small groups that are difficult for parents to offer in their home. Programs like Family Experience helps equip parents with tools in parenting.

SUNDAY MORNINGS

Parents can register their children online prior to visiting our church or they can stop by our Guest Families room for assistance in registering. A guided tour of their child’s ministry area is available for guests. Registration kiosks are strategically located throughout the building for registration.

If a family attends one service on a Sunday morning, we encourage children age 3 and older to attend Children's Church. Children who attend two services may attend a Kid’s Bible Fellowship during one service and Children’s Church during the other. Younger children attend the Nursery for one or two services.

Nursery (Birth - 24 months)

We share the love of Christ with your child by helping your child feel comfortable, happy, loved and secure in our nurseries. If your child is happy and well cared for we know you can relax and have the opportunity to worship freely. The nursery is available at all of our service times.

Children's Church (3s - 5th grade)

Children’s Church is a large-group experience that engages children through fun, age-appropriate opening activities, student-led worship, and a message around our "Big Idea" that brings children to a deeper understanding of God's love for them. Children's Church is offered during the 9:30 & 11:05 AM services. Children's Church is available during the 9:30 & 11:05 AM services.

KBF (3s - 5th grade)

Kids Bible Fellowship is a small group setting where children learn to navigate through the Bible, explore life application from God's Word, and deepen their relationships with their peers. KBF's meet at the 9:30 AM service hour.

Security/Check-in

Because child safety is of utmost importance, our Children’s Neighborhood is a secured area. Only parents and guardians with a Pick-up Tag for a child will be admitted to the area when classes are in session.

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS

Our Family Experience (FX) is a key part of our Children’s Ministries. FX nights are filled with fun and excitement for the children while placing tools in the hands of parents and guardians to inspire meaningful conversation in the home.

MTAs (3rd – 5th Grade)

Ministry Training Academies equip children for ministry and help develops life habits for spending time in God’s word. MTAs train children how to serve in ministry while simultaneously helping them grow spiritually. In addition to keeping upper elementary children engaged in church, it activates them to be a contributing member of our church family. Ministries include worship, audio/video/sound technology, photography, set designs, drama, puppetry, and games.

Children’s Choirs meet on Wednesday evenings before FX and MTAs. The choirs minister to their peers and our church family!

· Joyful Noise (3rd grade through 8th grade)

· Little Praises (ages 3 and 4)

· Powerful Praise (Kindergarten-2nd grade)

Children's Ministry Director

The Children's Ministry Director will oversee birth through Early Childhood Ministry Directors and lead the elementary-aged kids (K-5th grade).

This position will provide overall leadership for Children’s Ministry from birth through 5th grade. This includes providing strategic direction, ensuring children’s ministry aligns with the vision of New Covenant Bible Church, managing budgets, and supervising other children’s ministry team members.

Specific responsibilities related to leading the elementary area include overseeing Kindergarten – 5th Grade, curriculum, scheduling, recruiting, and leading both Early Elementary and Upper Elementary Children’s Church areas. In addition, this person will be over the curriculum and staffing for KBF’s (Kids Bible Fellowship). Currently, both KBF and Children’s Church curriculum springboards after our monthly Family Experience ("FX") theme. There is curriculum written for a 3-year cycle. This person will also be responsible for overseeing all elementary events such as summer camps and collaborating with our ministry teams for community outreach events such as our Fall Fest.

Elementary has two Children’s Church (CC) environments. K-2nd Grade are in one area and 3rd-5th Grade are in another. Currently, we have the lesson in Early Elementary CC at the beginning of service followed by worship and announcements. Once the speaker finishes the lesson with the Early Elementary CC he/she switches to the Upper Elementary CC and leads the lesson following announcements and worship.

KBF (Sunday School) is divided by grade. It is offered during the 9:30 AM service. There is a lead teacher in each room with 2-3 assistants. Following a short large group lesson, all leaders in the room help facilitate small groups of around 6-8 kids.

Challenge

The biggest challenge facing our Children's Ministries is an exciting one. The current Children's Pastor (Mick Schultz) has lead the ministry for 16 years and has now moved into the Family Life Pastor position supervising birth through college. Mick and his team have written their own curriculum, written a book (Ministry Training Academy) and provide coaching for other churches . This rich history has made for great traditions and deep commitment from volunteers and parents. Knowing this challenge, Mick and the leadership team are committed to supporting the new Children's Ministry Director as he/she brings in their new, fresh ideas.

Another challenge is that NCBC is currently in transition with their lead pastor. Slingshot Group is helping to lead this search as well and we look forward to bringing on the lead pastor shortly. Slingshot, the Elder board, and the search committees are working hard to insure that these positions are in alignment with the future of NCBC.

This is an exciting time to join the team a who will be molding and shaping the future of the church!

Opportunities

Our Children's Ministry attendance is over 400 children with over 100 adult and youth volunteers. These leaders are highly committed and loyal to the children. Many of these leaders have been serving in children’s ministry for more than seven years and look forward to serving with the new Children’s Director. The Children's Ministry team also includes a great team which includes a Nursery Director, Family Experience ("FX") Coordinator, Early Childhood Associate, as well as two support members, an Administrative Assistant and Resource Center Coordinator. Normally, the team also includes a student intern who assists the team in one-year terms.

Another blessing is that, in addition to the over 85 children who are trained in MTAs to serve weekly, over 25% of all other volunteers are students who came through MTA ministries and are well trained to serve in ministry along with adults.
