The Story

MISSION & VISION

Mosaic Community Church is a community of diverse voices valuing redemptive experience, encountering Jesus outside of many traditional markers of evangelicalism...

The Story

Mosaic was founded as a Vineyard church plant in West Philadelphia in 2004, led by Brad and Becca Zinn as co-pastors. They were supported by a small group that had been meeting in the neighborhood and was connected to a Vineyard church in the western suburbs. After becoming stable as an organization for some years, Mosaic found a building to purchase on the corner of 51st and Sansom streets in 2012. Although the geographic distance was small from its original location, the strategic intention to root the church on the transitional edge of a changing neighborhood was huge. By moving further from major university campuses and closer to predominantly African-American neighborhoods, the church intentionally pressed into significant cultural transition in attitudes about and engagement with church, and in turn gathered a committed, diverse membership with a big vision.

In 2015, Mosaic chose to leave the Vineyard association in order to maintain a focus as a “centered set” congregation that didn’t draw boundary lines beyond faith in Jesus for membership or leadership. Today, Mosaic is a congregation with about 90 members (up to 150 people in attendance), many of whom are families with young children, and remains an independent church. They are a community of diverse voices valuing redemptive experience encountering Jesus outside of many of the cultural markers of traditional evangelicalism.

Mosaic is primed for growth in today’s environment. They expect their next Senior Pastor to build on God’s work and Mosaic’s strengths to catalyze their next ministry phase, focused on identified strategic priorities: building spiritual depth, collaborating on anti-racism initiatives, engaging kids in their neighborhood, and connecting broadly with folks who haven’t previously found “church” to be helpful.

Mosaic Community Church is on a mission to be:

SPIRITUALLY CONNECTED

●     Authentic in relationships

●     Bold in leadership

PURPOSE-FILLED

●     Activation of spiritual gifts

●     Generous in all forms

●     Maintaining an ethic of service & justice

SATISFIED

●     Alignment of resources & need

●     Healthy perspective of self

●     Enjoyment over circumstance

Denominational Affiliation

Mosaic Community Church is an independent, non-denominational church that is currently unaffiliated. Mosaic is open to partnerships and memberships with a variety of collaborative groups, which currently includes POWER. This flexibility allows them to be present in the historic stream of orthodox faith while remaining relevant to the dynamic reality of a growing, modern culture. While not members, they also maintain a conversation with churches in the Blue Ocean Faith network.

Core Values

Jesus-Centered- focusing on Jesus in the center of our experience allows the congregation to recognize and move beyond challenging experiences or disagreements many have had with some institutional, personal, or political expressions of Christianity.

Inclusive- a centered-set orientation (i.e. focused on Jesus at the center as opposed to a bounded-set orientation where people are deemed inside or outside the group) allows the congregation to inclusively welcome and empower people who disagree on controversial issues but are pursuing the same center.

Practical– believing that experiencing Jesus brings meaning, purpose, satisfaction, and belonging to normal life allows the congregation to joyfully engage in the daily experience of all people in the community.

MINISTRY AND CULTURE

Sunday Programs

Worship Service: Sundays at 10 AM

123 South 51st Street

Philadelphia, PA 19139

Mosaic Church finds that music and song are powerful ways to connect with God, so they spend about 25-30 minutes singing songs. People might join in by standing and singing, dancing, or just sitting and reflecting quietly. They believe that God by the Spirit is active today, so people can respond as they feel comfortable. A lay leader will often highlight some of the things that are happening around Mosaic, and an offering is taken to support the important work of the church in the community. The pastor or a lay leader will share a message based on the Bible to encourage the congregation to live out their faith. The congregation takes time each month to remember Christ's sacrifice and resurrection by celebrating Communion together.

Prayer Ministry

During the musical worship, there is an invitation for people to receive personal prayer. If someone has a spiritual, physical or emotional need, the prayer team will meet them in the Prayer Alcove for personal prayer.

MOSAIC KIDS

Our Vision

Mosaic Kids aims to teach and model the love of Jesus to our kids, leading them to love and serve God and others, to seek social justice, and to embark on a meaningful and dynamic journey of faith.

Mosaic Kids is committed to offering relevant programs for children of all ages to get to know Jesus and themselves, as well as develop healthy relationships with others. Our hope is that our children will embark on a journey of faith, love, and service during their time with us. We do this by providing a safe, fun, and inviting space for them to experience and learn about God.

Dynamic Lessons

Children learn stories from the Bible in ways that are engaging, meaningful, and appropriate. Stories are presented through puppet shows, picture books, videos, skits, and reading from the Bible. There are fun games and crafts to complement the lessons, along with opportunities to deeply explore faith and ask questions in small group discussions for older kids.

Mindfulness Practice

Mindfulness is both a way of praying and caring for oneself. Our children learn to still and center themselves, mindfully waiting and listening for God. Through our mindfulness exercises, children invite the presence of Jesus, practice gratitude, experience peace, and hold themselves and others in the Light and Love of God.

Commitment to Social Justice

Our children engage in lessons and service projects that help them identify the injustices present in our world and in our neighborhoods. Our hope is that they will love and serve others out of the experience and abundance of love given to them by Jesus and their faith community.

Specific classes include nursery, preschool and kindergarten, Sunday school (grades 1-3), and finally the Blaze, where students in grades 4-8 meet weekly in a powerful community partnership alongside youth from a nearby church.

Middle School Ministry

Mosaic has created intentional communities for its youth as well. Called "The Blaze," students in grades 4-8 meet Sunday mornings and monthly on a Friday night in the chapel of a nearby church in a powerful community partnership for a time to build new friendships and grow in their faith. Using the Uncommon curriculum, students at Mosaic explore what it means to live a life of faith in the modern world. Through prayer and worship, students experience the reality of God's presence in their own world.

During the Week at Mosaic

  • Weekly Small groups meet in various locations around the city on most nights of the week for Christian fellowship, teaching and practical Bible discussions.
  • Monthly small groups focus on specific purposes or practices and only meet once a month. Examples include Supper Club (an open-to-all gathering providing a meal and community), Restore (a meeting designed for spiritual, emotional and physical restoration), Dismantling Racism (a monthly series that provides opportunities to discuss ways to be an active change agent in a society built in systemic racism), and a new bi-monthly prayer small group (which focuses on exploring different prayer practices).
  • Discover Mosaic is a class held periodically that covers the church's history, mission and values, and responsibilities of becoming and being a member at Mosaic.
  • Welcome gatherings for newcomers are hosted regularly. The pastor often reaches out to guests and members to have coffee and talk about life's issues and spiritual questions. Many times this results in secular or agnostic seekers who gain a better understanding of the faith and become more involved in the community, even before they make a faith commitment.
  • Special events such as Christmas Pageants, community involvement events (such as a Holiday Pop up Marketplace), Water Ice (a Philly special!) Wednesdays in the summer, and regular community service opportunities make Mosaic life interesting and lively!

LEADERSHIP

The leadership culture at Mosaic Community Church is a diverse, highly collaborative community led by the Senior Pastor. Mosaic’s board is called the Church Council. The Senior Pastor is the President of the Church Council, which is made up of 5-9 members who serve two-year terms. Some of the Church Council grew up right in West Philly, and others became “locals” later in life. They all share the same passion for community and authentic Christian living, and believe strongly in the present day work of the Holy Spirit, speaking and leading people today in the church.

Mosaic has a diverse and team-oriented work environment. The staff meets weekly to pray, plan, and check in on major projects and happenings in the church. Direct report staff meet with the Senior Pastor once a month for goal setting, accountability, feedback, input, and support.

CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES

Opportunities

  1. 1.An existing team of committed staff and lay leaders stand ready to impact their community. They have purchased a building in their target community, rehabilitated it to become a vibrant center of activity, and mapped their community and its needs. They are ready to expand their efforts to intentionally care for their neighbors.
  2. 2.A steady flow of new and diverse attendees from the community and beyond shows promise as a leadership pipeline for fresh ideas and strategies for growth.

Challenges

  1. 1.Departure of their founding pastoral leaders, Brad and Becca Zinn, will represent a challenge for the Church Council, the congregation, and the next leader to continue the mission to the next level.
  2. 2. A plateau in attendance and giving may indicate a transitional season in the life of the church, requiring new systems or renewed engagement to see the next phase of growth.

PHILADELPHIA

PENNSYLVANIA

The City

GQ Magazine's 2018 "City of the Year", Philadelphia is rich with assets. It has been featured on lists as diverse as America's "Most Fun”, “Most Walkable,” and “Most Historic”. Philadelphia boasts outstanding educational institutions such as Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and the University of the Sciences. Designated as a "First World Heritage City," Philly is a major historical site with nationally recognized attractions such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial. Philadelphia is also an avid sports town, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, 76ers, Phillies, and Flyers as well as the storied Big Five College Basketball tradition. To add to the celebration, Philadelphia is home to world-class food. The land William Penn designed as a place of religious freedom has welcomed waves of immigrants from various regions in its 336-year history, and it shows in the rich tapestry of local cuisine.

West Philadelphia

Affectionately known as ‘West Philly,’ West Philadelphia has its own distinctive character—from Walnut Hill, Dunlap, to Garden Court, and Cobbs Creek; Mosaic Community Church is intentionally rooted on the transitional edge of this changing neighborhood, which has been largely Jewish, then largely African-American, and is currently a mix of graduate students, middle class families (white, African-American, and a variety of others), low-income families, and seniors. A thorough history can be found in the latest “neighborhood plan” created by the city here. Culturally and ethnically diverse, West Philly boasts a booming residential area and is home to many parks, cafes and a variety of delicious restaurants, ranging from Ethiopian to Caribbean to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, while featuring the local cuisine of cheesesteaks and pizza that are the comfort food of so many in the city. Like much of Philadelphia, West Philly is navigating celebrating its history while undergoing rapid transformation and reinvestment.
