HISTORY & CURRENT

First United Methodist Church of Winter Park (FUMCWP) clings to the mission of making disciples of all people. Through worship, multigenerational connections, and service opportunities, FUMCWP lives into the vision of being ‘a vibrant family built on God’s grace, who share a passion for the Word of God, living and serving in the image of Jesus the Christ.’ Over 700 people worship as a vibrant family Sunday mornings across contemporary and traditional services.

Located in Orlando, Florida’s beautiful downtown neighborhood of Winter Park, FUMCWP continues to have a strong and vital presence in the community for over 125 years. Whether serving near or far - in Orlando, greater Florida, or even international missions - as Christ-like servants our church family embraces the call from God to act.

FUMCWP is a vibrant family of believers who believe that God is constantly calling to us and drawing us ever closer to Him. We know God has mighty work in store for us during 2018. To fulfill the mission and vision of the church, FUMCWP relies on four key pillars or elements of focus.

MISSION & VALUES

Vision

A vibrant family built on God’s grace, who share a passion for the Word of God, living and serving in the image of Jesus the Christ.

Method

This four-part method will provide our framework as we strive to relentlessly pursue those far from God with the hope and love of Jesus Christ.

Vibrant Family

As a vibrant family, we are energized and we are growing. We understand that life is filled with beautiful moments but also messy times. One of our duties is to equip others to serve, not simply equip them. We do this by providing our community with opportunities for connection and engagement. Our vibrant family is one that offer support and prayer for all. We encourage you to be a vibrant family member who includes, equips, cares, and supports each other.

Gracious Hosts

Built on God’s grace, we are acting as gracious hosts to all. We are founded on the knowledge that God’s love and mercy is not earned by anyone, but is given to us by God. We pursue intentional relationships with all people, knowing that everyone’s at a different point in their faith journey. The relationships we develop cling to the principle that God gave us His grace first. We encourage you to be a gracious host who invited others in their faith journey and grows in community together.

Passionate Seekers

We are passionate seekers who share a passion for the word of God. Unified in our drive to become stronger Christ followers, we fully embrace what Jesus asks us to be and what Jesus asks us to do. Relying on scripture, acting through God’s grace, and working together, we continually seek. We encourage you to be a passionate seeker who finds God’s grace and matures in faith.

Christ-like Servants

Living and serving in the image of Jesus the Christ is our motive as Christ-like servants. As Christ followers, we act based on His example. Our aim is to experience a life full of Christ’s love. Ultimately, we serve to make a difference in the lives of others – whether in our homes, in our community, or around the world! We leave the security of our comfort zones, meet people where they are, and live out the call of Christ in our daily lives. We encourage you to be a Christ-like servant who serves neighbors both near and far.

Beliefs

  • We believe in the Holy Trinity: God is our Creator, Jesus is our Savior, the Holy Spirit is God’s presence within us and in the world.
  • We believe in God’s grace as an unconditional, undeserved, and unearned gift of God’s love.
  • We believe in Jesus Christ as the ultimate expression and fulfillment of God’s grace whose life, death, and resurrection offer to all people transforming forgiveness and the promise of life eternal.
  • We believe in the Bible as the Word of God.
  • We believe prayer is our lifeline with God.
  • We believe the church is the body of Christ in the world today, present to form disciples of Christ and to share God’s love through Christ in the local and worldwide community.

CONTEMPORARY AND TRADITIONAL SERVICES

First United Methodist Church of Winter Park offers two distinct service approaches: the Contemporary Service and the Traditional Service. Each of these services has a different approach in music and teaching.

THE CONTEMPORARY SERVICE

Experience an informal, family-friendly relaxed setting in our multi-purpose worship center. A large screen displays worship images and song lyrics to assist you in participating in worship. A band with guitars, keyboards, drums and gifted vocalists express our faith through contemporary music which echos the sermon message. Holy Communion is served the first Sunday of every month. This service takes place in the Family Life Center at 9:30am Sunday mornings.

THE TRADITIONAL SERVICE

Altar flowers, beautiful stained glass windows and pastors wearing robes and liturgical colors continue the traditional worship style which features liturgy, hymns, ancient creeds and prayer. First UMC Winter Park Music Ministry brings outstanding music to express worship creatively through ensembles, choirs, soloists and instrumentalists. This service takes place in the Sanctuary at 8am and 11:00am Sunday mornings.

FAMILY MINISTRY APPROACH

The Family Ministry Director gives oversight to all ministries for kids and families from infants to high school. Leading a team of volunteers and staff to creating meaningful environments for kids and students to experience God in a deep and impactful way. The goal of the family ministry team will be to create an integrated strategy across all family ministries and develop ways to support, train and equip parents to be the primary spiritual leaders of the children.

Children's Programs

The Children’s Ministry of FUMCWP exists to pursue four core values. First, they strive to provide a safe place where children are known and feel loved. Second, they provide creative teaching of scripture and present it in a way that is relevant to every child’s life. Third, they want to make sure that every child that attends the church has FUN! Finally, they are committed to doing everything they can to bring the children that experience the church into God’s Kingdom.

The Children’s Ministry of FUMCWP is ready to innovate their ministry to children and also partner with the student ministry to reach families to the best of their ability. They currently utilize Orange curriculum, but really want to go a step further and begin ministering to the family as a whole.

Early Childhood (Infant-Pre-k)

The early childhood ministries are located in the preschool building and are well equipped for ministry with great spaces to explore and learn. There is a growing partnership with the preschool and many families come to the church through this ministry. There are huge opportunities to continue to strengthen that relationship and impact more families. Currently, they are using First Look curriculum and could grow in the area of a large group experience.

Elementary (K-5th)

The Elementary age has two experiences, one for K-1st and 2nd-5th graders. They have a fun and engaging space that is colorful and inviting with activities and games as kids come in. They have an energetic, large group time of worship and teaching and then a small group experience with leaders. The volunteer team is made up of a small core group that loves this ministry and is extremely passionate.

Student Programs

Elevate is the Student Ministry for FUMCWP, with around 70 students involved each week. They have a clear mission: “We hope to encourage each student to get to know and begin an intimate relationship with God that will last a lifetime.” Elevate Student Ministry reaches middle and high school students and helps them:

  • CONNECT through cultivating authentic relationships with God, ourselves and others.
  • PARTICIPATE in small groups, worship and Bible study in order to awaken spiritually and personalize Biblical truths.
  • MOVE from just learning about God to living out the Gospel through discovery, development and practice of our spiritual gifts.
  • FOLLOW Jesus Christ by SERVING our community and our world.
  • GROW continually in faith by allowing the spirit of God to work, so that we may reflect the character of Christ.

Sunday Night Elevate

Every Sunday night both middle and high school students meet to connect and grow together. This time involves food and hangout, corporate worship, specific teaching and small groups for both middle and high schoolers. Elevate feels like a tight community of students who love each other and experiencing God together.

Connect Groups

Throughout the week there are age and gender-specific Connect Groups that meet in homes. These are designed to provide a smaller and intimate experience to talk through specific issues each group is walking through. Many of the groups are student led.

LEADERSHIP

Senior Pastor, Rev. David Miller grew up in Chicago in a family of deep faith. He was active in church growing up. He earned a degree in biology from Wheaton College in Illinois, and felt called to ministry while serving as youth director at Silver Palm UMC in Homestead, FL. David attended Candler at Emory for his Masters in Divinity. He has served as Associate Pastor at FUMC Coral Gables, Senior Pastor at FUMC Gulfport, founding pastor of Hope UMC in Trinity and most recently at FUMC St Petersburg. His hobbies are running, reading and the beach. David has been married for 20 years and has three children.

Rev. Jayne Rideout has served as Minister of Discipleship since 2004. Jayne received her Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. Jayne is married to Rev. Gary Rideout. They have two daughters: Natalie and Meredith.

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

PLAYER / COACH

With a large ministry scope and responsibility, the Family Ministry Leader will need to have a “can-do” and “get it done” attitude that is driven and at times hands-on, but knows when to lead the team from the sideline as coach. With several young leaders on this team he/she will need to lead by example and have the ability to cast a compelling vision.

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP

As FUMCWP grows, it is imperative that the new Family Ministry Director designs a ministry structure that is scalable to grow with the church. Currently there is no middle-level volunteer leadership empowered to lead teams of people. The Children's Ministry is staff-run and is maxed in its capacity to grow without the implementation of a new volunteer leadership structure. The new Family Ministry leader will need to create a system of development that equips and releases volunteers into leadership. What should be implemented is a system of volunteers that are leading teams of volunteers, versus the current system where all volunteers are reporting directly to a staff member. This will allow greater impact of the care and development of volunteers as leaders and create a system that is both scalable and sustainable.

DEVELOPER

With several direct reports, it is vital that the Family Ministry Director be a developer leader who is investing in the ministry leaders to help them reach their greatest potential. The leader in this role must have the ability to develop a team approach to ministry and create an atmosphere of challenge and support for all of the Children’s Ministry teams.

FUMCWP is seeking out a strong, visionary leader who has the ability to develop staff, cast vision and develop strategies that will promote growth within the families at FUMCWP. The staff and volunteer teams need a new sense of purpose and direction in this very busy season of ministry at FUMCWP.

The Family Ministry Director must have proven experience in leading teams and developing ministries that have been strategic in effective weekend worship experiences for children.

FAMILY MINISTRY

The Director of Family Ministry will be responsible for partnering with the Family Ministry Team to develop a strategic plan on how they can extend their reach into the family. There is a very strong desire to create a program that not only engages children and students, but also partners with their parents so that what happens at church can serve as a huge support in the home.
