OUR STORY

From their beginnings 55 years ago meeting each week in a Savannah bank to now gathering in 6 locations which extend well beyond the limits of Savannah, Compassion Christian Church remains committed to leading people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus.  Founded in 1964 with 30 people as Savannah Christian Church this community was focused on allowing the truth of scripture to inform and activate them into becoming disciples of Christ.  In 1984 Savannah Christian called their current pastor, Cam Huxford, to lead them forward into a new season of growth and outreach.  Pastor Cam believed that to “reach those no one is reaching, they would need to do what no one else is doing”.  This led to Savannah Christian doubling in size over the next 10 years.

Savannah Christian eventually purchased their Henderson (broadcast) campus in 2003 and, as they continued to grow and expand their reach, began to add additional locations throughout the region.  God has continued to bless this church as they have stayed committed to “keeping the main thing the main thing”. In light of the tremendous growth this church began to experience as they added campuses outside of Savannah they decided to change their name in 2016.  They wanted a name that was no longer going to be geographically limiting to them.  This is when the name changed to Compassion Christian Church.  They’ve always been known as a compassionate church within their community and around the world.

The church partners with ministries across the region to feed and clothe those in need, to serve at-risk youth, to help assimilate refugees from around the world, and to support foster and adoptive families. Compassion Christian also partners with ministries around the world to plant churches, care for widows and orphans, provide fresh water, and build schools and medical facilities.  They also celebrate an incredible outreach every other year during the Christmas season where they create a “Journey to Bethlehem” which reaches tens of thousands in the community.

Compassion Christian is certainly heading into their most effective days of ministry and outreach.  This growing church of 8500 meet across 6 locations with more to come in the future.  This is an incredible time to step into the story God is writing at Compassion.  With many onramps for people to serve, give, love and lead others towards a life-giving relationship with Christ, Compassion Christian is a terrific place for the right leader to grow and expand their Kingdom influence to see a region changed for Jesus!

MISSION

Our mission is to lead people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus.

BELIEFS

Jesus

We believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God and God in human form.  We believe that the virgin-born Son of God died for our sins, was buried, rose from the dead and is coming again.  We believe He is both fully God and fully man. Philippians 2:5-7, John 14:19, John 8:58, John 1:1, 14, Colossians 2:9

The Bible

We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, the written record of His supernatural revelation of Himself to man, absolute in its authority, complete in its revelation, final in its content, without any error in its teaching and is “living and active,” ever speaking to our present circumstances. Hebrews 4:12, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21

Sin and Salvation

We believe that all people are guilty of sin because all people are born with a sin nature which leads all people to sin. Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 3:23

We believe the substitutionary death of Jesus on the cross is the sole basis of atonement for the sins of mankind. Isaiah 53:3-6, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:8

We believe that the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life are promised to those who trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. John 3:16-17, Ephesians 2:8-9

We believe the Bible teaches that the pattern to follow to receive Jesus as Savior is to believe in Jesus as God’s Son and Savior of the world, to repent of personal sin, to confess Jesus as Lord and to be immersed in baptism. Romans 10:9, Acts 2:38-39, Romans 6:3-4

The Church

We believe the mission of the church is to reach the spiritually lost for Christ, to teach with the goal of “forming Christ in them” and then to mobilize believers to accomplish God’s purposes in the world. Matthew 28:18-20

LEADERSHIP

Cam Huxford has been the Senior Pastor at Compassion Christian church for 35 years, leading it from a few hundred people to more than 8,500, meeting in 6 locations. Cam studied at Point University and Emmanuel School of Religion. He serves on the Christian Standard Publishing Committee, the Board of Directors of Point University and was recently president of the North American Christian Convention.

Cam speaks nationally and internationally for ministers’ conferences, church leadership and growth conferences, marriage seminars and men’s retreats. He and his wife, Sarah, have three sons, who are all involved in ministry, three daughters-in-law, and ten grandchildren.

Compassion Christian is an elder led church that empowers a Leadership Team to develop and maintain the vision. Pastor Cam is a true pastor with an evangelistic, outreach focused spirit. Nothing brings him more joy than to see someone make a decision for Jesus. He loves people in the truest sense of the word and has earned tremendous credibility within this community due to his outstanding tenure and faithfulness to this church and the mission of Compassion. Cam believes that the worship of Jesus is integral to creating an environment where the heart of the listener is prepared to receive the truth of God's Word. He is responsible for leading Compassion towards a common mission while empowering his staff to serve as directors/pastors in their specific areas of ministry. Elders and the Leadership Team work together in stewarding the mission/vision and provide oversight and accountability.

The Worship Experiences team is directly led by the Executive Pastor of Worship Experiences, Bill Gross. Bill is a seasoned creative and leader who has been a part of the Compassion team for 6 years. He provides guidance, encouragement, and overall leadership to the Worship Experiences Lead Team encompassing worship, tech/production, creative content, and guest experiences. Bill will be an incredible partner and leader to the Central Worship Director. This new position will serve on the Worship Experiences Lead Team and be an active and significant contributor to the overall creative and missional goals as well as the musical direction of Compassion worship gatherings. They will provide effective coaching, mentoring, encouragement and leadership to the campus Worship Pastors and serve as a creative catalyst in developing high impact worship services that touch the heart and point the lost to Jesus.

WORSHIP & MINISTRY CULTURE

To many, the worship style of Compassion may sound reminiscent of current modern worship bands like Elevation, Bethel, Jesus Culture, Hillsong and Passion. However, what this team specifically strives for is to lead with awareness of their immediate culture and those in their community.  Compassion desires to have spiritually aware Worship Pastors/Shepherds who will look at each weekend uniquely and allow the Spirit of God to lead their planning in a way that moves the heart of the congregation towards the heart of the Father in worship.

It is the goal of the Compassion Worship & Experiences Team to facilitate an environment where people can respond to the faithfulness, grace, love and presence of God. They aim for the songs they sing to be theologically truthful, spiritually formational, singable, responsive and delivered with an evangelistic heart as they engage people in Christ-centered worship. It is absolutely vital that the worship leaders be able to connect with and capture the congregation, leading them in active participation.  Their passion for Jesus, the people, and the team must be genuine and contagious!

The weekly band setup is fairly standard: guitars, keys, bass, drums, click and Ableton tracks combined with vocalists who lead worship and engage the congregation. Compassion believes in a team-based style of worship leadership and is looking for a leader who has the competency and confidence to continue training Worship Pastors who empower other gifted servant leaders to grow and lead. The overall purpose and feel of the weekend gatherings is to engage the believer in worship while providing the unbeliever a venue in which they are exposed to the truth of the Gospel and genuine community with others. The goal is for the environment to be dynamic, compelling, participative and authentic.

All gatherings embrace the use of creativity and leverage high quality A/V/L technology. The technical team at Compassion does a terrific job of adapting modern technology in a tasteful, high impact and distraction free way. Each campus is nicely outfitted with top notch modern technology giving the worship and technical teams every opportunity to succeed and enjoy the experience. The music and technical teams at Compassion are made up of committed volunteers who give their time to serve. The health and size of these teams is moderately strong yet there is a need to grow more in both skill and connection with one another. It is essential to know that the need for the music teams to deepen and strengthen the bench is important. This is an area where this new Central Worship Director will be able to greatly influence the culture of Compassion by helping Campus Worship Pastors create pathways for growth and development musically and spiritually.

Kids and Student programming is absolutely outstanding at Compassion! Nursery, preschool and elementary programming is available at all Compassion locations during regular adult gatherings. The goal is to provide an age appropriate experience for all kids with everything from high energy worship, to Bible stories, teaching, games and connection time with other kids and age appropriate activities.
Middle and High School students learn to “own” their faith and take personal responsibility for their spiritual growth. Worship and teaching sessions focus on relevant issues. Small group gatherings offer time to talk and pray together. Compassion also has an outstanding ministry to people of all ages with special needs.

Compassion Discipleship Groups and Outreach are two of the best things about Compassion. Groups meet throughout the year and provide a pathway for people in all stages of life to connect with others in community. This is where people learn to grow together! Compassion also believes that God has designed us to make an eternal difference both here in our community and around the world. This is where Compassion Outreach shines! There are many way for people to take the LEAP and begin serving others. Learn more about Compassion Outreach by CLICKING HERE.

Even as this community continues to grow, the real story of Compassion's history is comprised of individual stories of lives who have been changed by the power of Jesus. Hundreds each year choose to surrender their lives to Christ, get baptized, and give sacrificially of their time, talents, and resources so that the character of Savannah and surrounding communities will be shaped by those who boldly take the Gospel beyond the borders of the Compassion campuses.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Compassion Christian has recently undergone a significant season of transition, reinvention and redefining across the organization. It has led them to a place of rethinking some of their staffing, processes and systems and honing in on the things that are going to take them to the next level of effectiveness as a church and organization. This season has, specifically, brought the Worship Experiences Team to a place of providing more consistency across all 6 locations as it pertains to the worship gatherings. It has allowed them to better identify the current areas of strength as well as the blind spots they will want to address to reach maximum effectiveness. Compassion understands that some of the things that got them to where they are now won't get them to where they see God leading them to go. This is true of staffing, systems, processes and vision. It is in this spirit of Kingdom growth and stewardship that they add this new position to their Worship Experiences Team.

The current culture and health of the worship and creative ministry at Compassion is very stable, but lacking some excellence and intrigue. There have been a few staff transitions within this team over the past several months, including some internal campus shifts, which have led to a new found energy within their weekly gatherings as a creative group. They have begun to move the needle in terms of bringing consistency to their worship gatherings across campuses, but still have quite a bit of training and coaching that needs to be done within the context of worship staff and volunteers. Stage presence and delivery need to be coached across all campuses. Bill Gross, Executive Pastor of Worship Experiences, has expressed his desire to see the level of excellence and consistency increased across all campuses. Bill is a "moment-maker" and deeply wants to see the worship pastors led and coached up in a way where they are planning and leading spiritual moments and recapturing a sense of wonder in the worship gatherings. It's important for each Worship Pastor to fully understand their audience in order for them to effectively engage and lead them well. It is in this spirit of leadership and growth that the new Central Worship Director will become a key leader in shaping a thriving, aware, creative and Christ-centered culture of worship at Compassion.

The Central Worship Director (CPD) will serve on the Worship Experiences Lead Team under the leadership of Bill Gross. The CPD will work shoulder to shoulder with the other Worship Experiences Lead Team directors who oversee Production, Creative Content and Guest Experiences across all 6 campuses within the organization. They will have a seat at the leadership table with those who drive the mission of Compassion Christian forward through creative expressions and ideation. The CPD will be the key influencer over the worship ministry of Compassion and will serve as a mentor, leader, encourager, and friend to the campus Worship Pastors. They will work closely with the Campus Pastors to make sure goals and objectives for that campus Worship Pastor are being met as well as assist the Campus Pastor in coaching the Worship Pastor toward ministry effectiveness. The right person for this job will have proven experience within the context of a multisite church ministry either as a Worship Pastor or Creative Leader. They will also have experience in developing systems and processes for team/volunteer recruitment, training, discipleship and empowerment. This is an area of need across the organization at Compassion. While the team dynamics are very good there is a need to deepen and strengthen the bench both musically, relationally and spiritually in community. The right leader will partner with the campus Worship Pastors to help them develop a culture of connection and growth. The Central Worship Programming Director will focus their attention right away towards building more intentional teams who are healthy, connected and driven with a mission to create Christ-centered worship encounters embracing a modern and artistic expression helping people experience the presence and power of God in worship.

The CPD will lead with a great sense of spiritual awareness and a shepherd's heart to lead the Worship Pastor team and congregation into genuine and participative worship. They will lead through a creative lens that recognizes the culture they are living and serving in with an awareness of how to engage the heart of those who attend across cultural and generational lines. Their ability to incorporate new styles of worship and creativity into what Compassion is already doing is of high value. This leader will help the Worship Pastors learn to "read the room" and pastor moments through exhorting/encouragement, speaking into moments as appropriate and leading the Church in more than just songs but a meaningful, Jesus-centered, worship encounters. They will value excellence and the stewardship of gifts and lead their team with an evangelistic heart for the lost.

Compassion is looking for a DEVELOPER and not just a DOER. They must believe in, and have experience in, multiplying themselves into others and creating a team of disciple-makers who will go and do the same. We see the best fit as someone who is also worship leader themselves. The ideal person will possess strong instrumental and vocal skills as well as a heart for God and active walk with Jesus. They will have regular opportunities to continue leading worship alongside campus Worship Pastors as desired. Worship leading may, at times, become more frequent for the CPD as campuses are added and campus Worship Pastor positions become available.

This is dynamic place to grow and expand in both influence and leadership and make tremendous Kingdom impact for years to come under the leadership of dynamic, Godly leadership and in partnership with a terrific and gifted staff!
