HISTORY & CURRENT

Calvary Church was founded in 1948 with the dream of becoming a "Lighthouse for the Gospel" in Pacific Palisades and West Los Angeles. For 71 years God has been faithful, building strong foundations for future growth. They honor their legacy and lean into their future. Calvary is a growing, multi generational community with roots that go deep in the culture of Los Angeles. Their spiritual family is diverse, they are singles and families, young and old, creatives and corporate leaders who have found the grace of Jesus to be enough. They stand united behind their vision, To be a community following Jesus for the renewal of our city.

Calvary is an independent Church and does not belong to a denomination or fellowship of Churches.  Through the radical generosity of God they have been blessed with an amazing, 8-acre campus with a 700 seat sanctuary. There are over 70,000 sq feet of classrooms, an athletic field, and a multi-purpose gym. The church is the home to Calvary Christian School, one of West LA’s premiere PS-8th grade schools and a vital ministry of Calvary Church.

Calvary is a Church that embraces a gathered and scattered rhythm of ministry. They gather weekly at 10am to encounter God in worship and receive teaching from His Word. They are seeking to be a church with a depth of theology that cannot be dismissed living with a power that cannot be denied.

Calvary’s growing network of Community Groups create a place for people to practice the way of Jesus in community. To further their discipleship vision Calvary also has vibrant men’s and women’s ministries where deeper spiritual formation is happening. They are actively engaged in serving their city through strategic partnerships and intentional outreach. Their Family and Kids ministries are strong and engage hundreds of families every year through community events, Calvary Kids Club and Camp experiences. Youth ministries are a life giving presence to the campuses of West LA and are ready for a new season of growth and leadership.

VALUES, VISION & MISSION

VALUES

Every Family has a distinct culture.

These core values unite our spiritual house and guide everything we do. We are one expression of the infinitely beautiful Church that Jesus is building on the earth for His Glory. It is our desire o be joined together by His love and rise in His power, becoming a LIGHTHOUSE OF HOPE for our city and the world.

Jesus is Central: Jesus is preeminent in our history and eternity so we make Him central in all that we do.

Church as Family: The Church is a family to which we belong. We value relationships and create a place for every person.

We is Greater Than Me: The story of God we are a part of is more important that the role any one of us plays.

Expectant Faith: We dream boldly believing God is always at work and the best is yet to come.

Radical Generosity: We give freely as a response to the extravagant grace God has shown us through Jesus.

We Invite: We embrace the call of Jesus to be light in this world, The Gospel is not a secret to be kept but hope to be shared.

All In: We stand as one behind the vision God has given.

STUDENT MINISTRY APPROACH

Student Ministry

From biblical teaching and group discussion to lively games and hangout time, Calvary Students create an environment for students to encourage each other in their relationship with Jesus Christ and to build relationships with peers and caring leaders.

  • Calvary HSM meets together on Sunday nights.
  • Calvary MSM meets together on Wednesday nights.

LEADERSHIP

Calvary is a congregationally governed church.  Elders are selected through a nomination process and serve three-year terms.  Elders are teachers, spiritual shepherds and servant-leaders.

Deacons are also selected through a nomination process, but serve two-year terms with an optional third year.  These men and women oversee finances, facilities, hospitality, congregational care, and other areas of ministry.

The Lead Pastor, Ramin Razavi, serves as an Elder and is responsible for hiring and managing the day to day ministry with the staff.

CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

The person who fills this role must be comfortable around an affluent, highly educated, sophisticated congregation. This person must be able to engage this community with love and grace, without being overly impressed nor intimidated by their affluence.

The Student Ministry Director is a unique position to spiritually impact the young people for Christ in our congregation, school, and community; many of whom come from families that are influential in the world of business, entertainment and government in Los Angeles. The challenge at Calvary Church of Pacific Palisades lies in growing the church and Student Ministries spiritually and numerically in an affluent, self-reliant community.

LOCATION & DEMOGRAPHICS

Located in Pacific Palisades, Calvary Church is conveniently close to Malibu, Santa Monica and the City of Los Angeles.

This area is one of the most desirable communities in Los Angeles.  It has a small-town, family feel but lies within the large city.  Residents are well educated, innovative, active, and entrepreneurial.

The vast majority of area residents grew up in middle class environments and became successful in their chosen field.  Accordingly, they put a premium on being “excellent” in all that they do and expect the same with the organizations they participate in.
